ABOUT
Denmark calling — again: When I saw Figurines, a band of childhood friends from the city of Aalborg, at the Spot festival in 2003, I was won over by their Replacements-like verve (minus the constant threat of alcoholic collapse) and spindly, colliding-overtone guitars, as if they’d spent all of high school listening to nothing but Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I then learned that Figurines’ Danish debut was aptly called Shake a Mountain. Skeleton, their U.S. bow, is even tighter and brighter. At high tangled-jangle speed — “The Wonder,” “Ambush,” “Wrong Way All the Way” — these Danes sound a bit like Franz Ferdinand but much closer to a first-album Strokes with Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue yelping at the helm. Consider yourself introduced.
